A CNY Visit Not To Be Missed - Ah Hoe Chek & Ah Ee

I always try my very best to visit my former school bus C21 Ah Hoe Cek and Ah Ee during CNY. Last year when I went visiting them, I was pregnant. This time around, I brought Shern with me.

We went there on the 2nd day of CNY. As usual, they greeted us with such warmth.

This year, they are grandparents themselves. They now have a granddaughter and also a grandson. So their place is also full with playpen, toys, etc. Shern is of course delighted when he saw all the toys.

Not surprisingly, you can see that obviously that Ah Hoe Chek loves children (this explains why he is a school bus driver). He is playing and carrying Shern the whole time there.

Ah Hoe Chek playing with Shern

Ah Ee is no longer driving her mini school bus. She is now promoted to grandma and thus is taking care of her 2 mth old grandson.
It is always good to see them still healthy and happy. Next year, I will bring hubby with me to visit them so that hubby will know who drove me to school since I was a little girl of five.

A photo with them before we left the place.

CNY Mischief

There is certainly no dull, boring days when hubby's favourite niece and nephew is back for the CNY hols. With one hyperactive baby AND two super-hyperactive toddlers, I gave up.

At times, I just left Jamie and Dylan to entertain Shern while I gobbled up my lunch or dinner.

And this time around, what mischief did they come up with?

A nice, red, dinosaur tattoo on Shern's left arm (i guess with the help from their mum since it is being so nicely tattooed)

So that was how Shern got himself his first tattoo. And he proudly wore his tattoo on his arm with sleeveless tops when I took him for CNY hse-visiting.
One of my friend's mum actually thought that Shern had a real tattoo on his arm!

From Our Neighbours

Since we just moved into our new home, our new neighbours there are also fairly new themselves. They are actually newly-moved-in tenants. I like the friendly ang moh who always greets us with a smile and also the quiet, rather shy Chinese who is a chef at Hard Rock Hotel.

I was being surprised when hubby brought up six freshly baked Strawberry Cheese Tarts sometime last week.
"from our neighbours" was all he said.

Strawberry Cheese Tarts

Hmmm...I guess these delicious looking tarts were baked by the quiet, shy Chinese.
We are blessed with such nice neighbours.

p/s - our neighbours did tasted my blueberry muffins and banana muffins. And I heard that our chef neighbour finished the four banana muffins all by himself.

V-Day 2010

I don't like it when V-Day falls on the 1st day of the CNY. I mean, I dont believe in paying more on V-Day but then I still like to go out to celebrate at places where prices are not hiked up ridiculously.

This year, hubby and I celebrated V-Day during lunch on the eve. We dropped Shern at mum's place for 2 hours and off we went nearby to celebrate.

However, many places are closed. We saw that Vintage Bulgaria was open as they cater for tourists. As I have not been to Vintage Bulgaria before, we went in after checking out the menu and the price list! :P

It was there that I gave hubby his V-Day present. I am excited to give him the present because I don't give him V-Day presents every year.

Peter was surprised to see the Borsheims sticker on the present.
Borsheims is a jewelry store in the US and this big package does not seem to be containing jewelries.

So what did I get for hubby?
Tada...

Yes, it is a Monopoly boardgame. Mind you, this is no ordinary Monopoly. It is the limited edition of Berkshire Hathaway Diamond Edition Monopoly game.

I have tried sourcing it everywhere in Penang but it seems that it can't be found anywhere in Malaysia. No one is willing to ship it for me from overseas. I've tried all major supermarkets, Toys 'R' Us, MPH, Popular.....
They claim that their vendors do not have it because it is a limited edition and the demand for it is low.

Luckily, thanks to a good friend, Alan, who is in the US during that time agreed to bring it back for me if I buy it online from the US.

And of course, hubby is ecstatic. I know no one would appreciate this game more than Peter. He was looking and touching it like his precious baby.

Halfway looking at his new baby, food arrived. We ordered 1 set menu to share as I was not hungry.

Lunch Set: appetizer, main course & desert

The broccoli soup was good. Creamy and smooth.

Fish was very salty. I felt like we were hurting our kidneys by forcing ourselves to finish the fish. I think the chef accidentally poured in too much salt.

I purposely asked what is the 'desert of the day' before choose the menu and the waitress there told me it is lemon cheesecake. But when we finished the main course, she told me that the lemon cheesecake has finished and they replaced it with ice-cream with banana slices. Don't let the pic fool you. The portion was really small. I was feeling rather displease then.

Then I wanted to try their creme brulee as they said it was their signature dish desert. It tasted OK but a little pricey.

All in all, I wasn't really happy with my first dining experience in Vintage Bulgaria. Thumbs down.

We then took a picture when we were being served our coffee.

Before we left the place, hubby insisted that he wanted to take a picture in front of the restaurant holding his Monopoly Game high up in the air.

So, here goes.....

Hubby really looks like an overgrown kid, huh? I think no one will believe me if I tell them that he is gonna be 30 this year.

Now is the time for the BIG question: So what did hubby did for me for V-Day?

He took all my storybooks and have them wrapped up nicely in transparency covers. (I've been wanting to do that for quite some time but I kiam siap).
Now he did it for me :)

Yiu-Shern - 7 months

1 Feb 2010

Yiu-Shern's 7 months Milestone

Play Time
Remember the fun balls that hubby bought for Shern during my birthday? Well, the picture above shows a happy Shern playing with it. But does he really likes it?
He likes these fun, colourful balls. But because they are round and kinda smooth, he cannot sink his teeth onto them. They keep sliding off his teeth. So sometimes, he feels kinda frustrated because he cannot bite onto the balls. Hahaha

And because Shern is learning to sit now, he has more things to play. He is now playing the Kick 'N Whirl Carnival in the sitting position that I bought secondhand not so long ago. He likes the voice activated mode.

But I find that he likes his Vtech walker more. I am so glad my ex-IDT colleagues bought it for him. More buttons to push, twirl and he absolutely loves the green telephone that comes with it. Look at him holding it with his right hand?

Paediatrician
This is the second time we took Shern to see Dr. Chiah in GMC.
It was almost an hour's wait this time. Shern was getting restless and even hubby got irritated by the wait. It seemed like every other kids in the waiting area has been called in but not us. In the end, I asked the nurse why are we waiting for so long. Then she checked and said that the downstairs front office was late in registering for us.

When we were called into the room next, hubby was already complaining to Dr. Chiah regarding the long wait. Dr. Chiah gave a call downstairs and told them '...the father is not happy..'. Hehe.

After that, Shern was given his 1st Pneumococcal jab. As this jab is well known for the sting, I expected Shern to cry louder or maybe even longer. To my surprise, he just gave a 5 seconds wail when the medicine was injected in and that was all. I'm so proud of him.

Anyway, all is well with Shern. He is growing well and everything seems fine.

Shern's growth measurement:
Age - 7 months @ 7 Jan 2010
Weight - 8.50 kg
Length/Height - 69 cm
Head Circumference - 44cm

This time around, Shern gained 1/2 a kg but his length and head cir. remains the same. It's alright, everything is within the normal frame.

Although Dr. Chiah told me that the percentage of babies getting a fever after this jab is high: 1/10, Shern was perfectly fine. No fever at all. *mummy beams*

Mummy's Eyes and Daddy's Everything Else?
Almost everyone that sees Shern comment that "...he looks like daddy but he has mummy's eyes..."

Is it true?

Manja-ing with Ah-Kong & Ah-Ma
Shern no longer has Strangers Anxiety problem with his Ah-Kong & Ah-Ma. He doesn't mind them carrying him and even plays and baby talk with them.

This has made me happier because at least now I get to eat in peace whenever I go back to MIL's house because Shern now allows MIL to carry him while I eat.

Bath Time is Fun Time
Shern still loves bath time. He now has a new toy in his bath tub. A yellow, ducky, cloth sponge. Min-yee gave it to him because she says he will love it more than her.

25 January 2010

However happy he is in the bath tub, the moment u carry him out and lay him down on the bed, he will start to protest and cry. He simply hates lying down and thus changing him is always such a battle. Sigh.

Peaceful Afternoon Naps due to Cloth Diapers
As I am currently slowly converting Shern from lampin to cloth diapers, Shern now has more uninterrupted sleep as he wont wet the bed and wakes up.

Babies Have Got Short Hands?

Min just told me something I did not notice earlier. She said babies' hands are so short compared to adults.
I mean, lift your hands high up in the air and most probably they will be twice as long as your head's length.
But look at Shern's hands. His hands only reaches slightly over his head. Hehe....are all babies' hands this short or only Sihern's? Or is Shern's head too big? :)

Shern Joins In The Search Of A New Fridge

Mum's fridge broke down. So off we went to SenQ to buy a new one. Guess what? Shern joins in too. So now mum's new fridge has gone through Shern's approval as well before it is standing there in the kitchen. *grin

Quick Dip in the Swimming Pool

Our new place's swimming pool is always very cold towards the year-end because the sun never reaches it every single day.
One hot day, all of us were sweating at home and we longed for a swim. We thought that the water should not be that cold. So 3 of us changed into our bathing suits for a swim.
But the water is still icy cold. We were there just long enough to take 2 pics. And off we came up again. Too cold even for us, and I don't want any of us catching a cold. Least of all Shern. Surprisingly, Shern did not protest even when we put him in the water. He likes cold water, huh?

Shern's Priceless Facial Expressions
Look at Shern's facial expressions. They are priceless! ;D

Baking for Shern

Yes, I even bake Shern's food sometimes. So far, this recipe does delight Shern whenever he gets to eat them.

Baked Pear and Carrot Mash

1/2 small carrot
1/2 big ripe Chinese pear

1. Peel the carrot
2. Peel, then core, the pear.
3. Cut the carrot into strips and the pear into chunks.
4. Wrap the prepared carrot and pear in foil and seal, to make a parcel. Poke a few holes on top.
5. Bake at 375 deg F (190 deg C) until tender, which is about half an hour. Mash well or puree.

left: Pear slices and carrot strips in foil before baking
right: After baked and mashed

I usually use chinese pear because they are more easily available currently. The sweetness in the pear became caremalized brown and the taste is so good. I love the taste myself.

I only need to mash it because the pear slices and carrot strips are tender and soft and I am starting Shern on lumps and chunkier texture.

Try it out and see if your baby loves it as much as Shern.
