Yiu-Khye - Week 5

19 October 201

Pediatrician Visit

It was Khye's first visit out of the house after a month, and it was a visit to the peds the following day following his fullmoon.

Khye's Growth Measurement

Age - 1 month @ 15 October 2012
Weight - 4.50 kg
Length/Height - 55 cm
Head Circumference - 38cm

15 October 2012

Went to visit Dr. Dan on for his 1 month visit and Hepatitis B vaccination. Khye let out a loud cry for after the jab, but was alright after I carried him.

Told the doctor about his loose stool which I am concerned as it was much more watery and frequent than normal breastfeeding stools. And also his diaper rash gotten worse due to the frequent stools. Stools were a mixture of mustard yellow and green, which is still ok for breastfeeding standard. And I told the doctor I found some blood stain in his stools twice and showed him the photo of his stool which I snapped.

Dr. Dan said there must be an anal fissure due to the frequent stools, and thus led to the diaper rash. He asked what diaper cream I am using, so I told him the Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm and also Bepanthen Ointment. He said they may not be strong enough and asked me I wanted another cream. He recommended to prescribe him zinc oxide cream for preventing and treating the diaper rash, and also to treat the anal fissure. I told him OK, because all I wanted was to treat his anal fissure before it gets worse.

He did not prescribe any meds for the loose stools because he said they are not really diarrhoea. It may be the food I eat, and the baby is just adjusting his hormones to it. And of course I was asked to bring Khye back to see him if it didn't get any better.

Playmat
17 October 2012

As Khye's waking hours are more nowadays, I took out the playmat and he enjoyed lying down there for awhile. He is now interested in things/toys when you waved it in front of him, but his attention span is not that long yet.

Visiting God Chor-chor

After his fullmoon, we brought Khye to visit his God Chor-chor, which is my dad's Godmum. Their age difference is like erm...80 years or so. ;)

And Shern fell asleep on her very vibrant colour sofa chair, so very pretty.

Going Out

I've brought Khye out for breakfast a few times, to places which are not congested, and clean. Usually, he is asleep in the stroller.

Sleep

Besides sleeping on his secure sleeper, and in his baby cot during night time, he usually sleeps in the bouncer in the day time, which is airy and bouncy, which he likes.

14 & 19 October 2012

Khye looks so mini on the bouncer. :)
19 October 2012

His awake time is usually in the airy bouncer in Pho-pho's house. He likes to do this expression.
19 October 2012

And this is the expression he does when he is about to cry. Look at his pitiful face. Haha.

Yiu-Shern - 21 Months

20 March 2011 @ 21 Month

Speech
There is actually not much obvious development in just a month. The most obvious being that Shern is improving on his speech. He can speak more words by the day.
And to hear him sing Justin Bieber's 'Baby Baby Baby Oh' is really awesome. That is the most words he can manage for now - Baby Baby Oh - 3 words in a row.

Playing Using His Hands
Nowadays, I find that he is interested in playing toys which requires handling of his hands, such as stacking. But he is not so interested in stacking his blocks. He is more interested in stacking other stuff, household stuff he could get hands on like empty tins, etc.

And he is also more interested in playing with the wooden loop-y toy (see photo above) I bought for him more than a year ago. This is an educational toy which helps him on hand and eye coordination and creativity. Although he played with this since a year ago, Shern now has more steady hands and is able to loop the beads through the loops really well now.

Pacifier
One thing though, he is now very very addicted to his pacifier. He used to only suck it when he wants to sleep, but in recent months, he asks for his pacifier even when he is awake. This is bad because he tends to salivate more when it is in his mouth. And he is also into biting it often. And Avent Pacifiers don't come cheap. So now I buy him cheap pacifiers. I'm thinking of weaning him off pacifiers soon.

Little Imitator
Shern learns things very fast. And he is now coming to an age where he tries to imitate us in everything we do.
Like I was using my teeth to bite the paper I was holding as I was tying my hair with both hands, Shern immediately took the paper from my mouth and he put it into his mouth. I was like..'Oops'.
And there was once where I used my foot to move his toy car aside so that people couldn't trip over it, Shern then followed me and used his foot to move his car too. Another 'Oops'.

Visit to the Paediatrician
This time we brought him to the paed for two reasons. One, is for his 2nd JE jab. Two, is because of his flu. He has been having a prolonged case of flu about a month ago after we came back from Phuket. Only two weeks after he was well, he came down wit the flu again.

Dr. Chiah said it must be a different virus. Anyhow, I feel that I am becoming more of a home-paed myself for Shern as I now know all the names of the common medicine like Piriton, Polaramine, Paracetamol, Mucosolvan, etc. :)

Shern's growth measurement:
Age - 21 month @ 25 March 2011
Weight - 11.0 kg

This visit shows no weight gain from last month. It is considered a very good weight with his flu and all. And we did not measure his height that day. Next month, we will do so.

Taking Shern to visit the paed is very pleasant now. He is happy when I tell him 'we go see doctor' and he would say 'aiii...' Shern likes to play with the toys on Dr. Chiah's table. And he does not make a fuss when doc uses his stethoscope on him, and even opens his mouth for doctor to see his throat.
And the visit always ends with Shern saying 'bye' to Dr. Chiah, waving his hands and giving him a flying kiss!

Yiu-Shern - 20 Months

14 February 2011 - McD in Jungceylon, Phuket

Shern has many 'Firsts' this month. First time flying. First time going to the beach. First time going to a playground. First time saying 'mami' and 'dy'.
His experiences and exposure to new things are getting more and more.

Because of CNY and our family trip to Phuket, we had to postpone his 20th month visit to the paed.

This time around was to take his first JE jab. This is an optional jab and is only compulsary for children resident in the state of Sarawak (according to the govt list). But since his paed recommended it, we chose to take it.

Shern was being angelic during the visit. He did not fuss when doctor was using his stethoscope to listen to his lungs since Shern had a little cough. He also did not make a sound when doctor used a tongue compressor to see his throat. I was surprised. Shern was just busy playing with the toys on doctor's table.

Since shern was no more a baby, he was no more required to sit on the baby weighing scale. Shern being a big boy was asked to stand on the normal weighing scale.

Shern's growth measurement:
Age - 20 month @ 25 February 2011
Weight - 11.0 kg
Length/Height - 85 cm

Physical Strength
I noticed that Shern's hands and legs are getting stronger. He can heave himself up easily and I see him climbing up the dining chairs and sofas more often.
I also see him climbing up stairs with more ease (with my help) compared to last time.

Speech
These last two weeks we see vast improvement on his speech. Besides saying 'Mami' and 'Dadi', he can now say more words as days go by. Things like:
- wou wou (dog)
- miao miao (cat)
- mumm mumm (food)
- ann kee (cranky the crane)
- lowee (lorry)
- bai (bye)
- pho pho (pho-pho / grandma)
- yee yee (yee-yee)
- ba (bus)

This is a really big improvement on his speech. Before this, being a late-talker, he refused to say anything other than a few words. So now I am very happy.

Milk
Shern is not a big fan of formula milk. He drinks alright but he doesnt really ask for it. We have to initiate to give to him. He drinks 5-6oz in the morning when he wakes up. And another 5-6oz before he sleeps at night. In the afternoon, sometimes, he will drink another 5-6oz after his afternoon nap. But not all the time.

I tried changing other formula brands, just in case he doesn't like Anmum Essential, but it was even worse. He refused to drink them. So I'm sticking to Anmum Essential Step 3 as he still drinks them and he does not have any constipation problem.

Food
Nowadays, we seldom cook special food for him. He just eats whatever we eat, provided that there must be at least a dish of non-spicy food that he can eat. However, he loves soup. He would finish the whole bowl of food and sometimes the rice in it is untouched.

As for snacks, he loves Sun Maid Raisins. And he loves Yakult/Vitagen.
He used to like biscuits too, but nowadays he stops fancying them.

Character
I think he gets more and more naughty as he grows. He now throws tantrums quite often. Or he would whine the whole hour without reasons. And sometimes he throws his toys or push you away when we tried to talk to him. Scolding and beating on his hands do not seem to work. Talking to him about it does not seem to be working too.

I think I need to do something about disciplining him.

Sleep
He sleeps better now, sometimes sleeping through the night without any problems. And even if he does wake up in the middle of the night, he would whimper/sob for me and if I am next to him, he would just put his head on my tummy or touched me with his hands and he would continue to sleep back.

And no, he does not wake up in the middle of the night for milk. Last feeding was 5-6oz of milk before he sleeps.

Visit to the Paed - 18 Months

11 December 2010

Took Shern to see Dr. Chiah for his 18-month-old booster jab.
We waited for more than an hour this time and Shern was getting restless. But the moment we went inside the paed room, he was excited to see all the toys on the doctor's table.

I knew from experience that I have to ask Dr. Chiah all questions and concerns before his jab, because once Shern started howling, we would have to leave immediately.

And that was when I told Dr. Chiah about my concerns with Shern's speech. Up until now, Shern could only say 'mumm-mumm' and 'aii.....' clearly and consistently. But I also told the doc that he could understand us by showing various actions and pointing at things.
Doc says this shows that Shern's hearing is fine and he can process things with his mind. But then he may be having some speech-language delay.

He said that this is still not the worry stage yet as Shern is only 18 months old. But early intervention is good to see what we as parents can help the child. I could see his point and he then referred us to a Speech Therapist outside of GMC.

Then it was time for the booster jab. Distracting Shern with toys, Shern did not even cry! He did whimper a little but it was over so soon that he forgot all about it. He was really a good boy!
After hearing from a friend that this jab could lead to fever and uneasiness to the child, I asked Dr. Chiah about it. He said that the percentage of getting a fever with this jab is not high - only 1 in 20. (This is a low percentage because his earlier jab percentage was 1 in 5).

Shern then fell asleep in the car on the way back home. And during the car ride, I was thinking and toiling the idea of early intervention. Then I knew I was determined to do all I can in helping Shern. But first, I want to learn all about speech-language delay. And the best way to learn is 'thru google.

Oh, thank goodness for the invention of search engines!

Yiu-Shern - 10 months

24 April 2010

Yiu-Shern's 10 months Milestone

The photo above shows Shern biting into some plastic-y thing with all his might. It is actually the table corner backets/protectors that Shern somehow managed to pull them out.

Paediatrician

Shern's growth measurement:

Age - 10 months @ 19 April 2010
Weight - 9.20 kg
Length/Height - 74 cm
Head Circumference - 48cm

Shern seemed to have grown quite a lot based on the measurement taken at Tanjung Bungah clinic. However, this time round, we went there almost the middle of the month, thus it was more than a month and a half since his last measurement, thus explains the growth spurt.

Cheeky Smiles

I love Shern's cheeky smiles here. He looks so happy. And his botak head somehow makes him look even cuter. Hehe.

10 April 2010

Mirror

Shern is no more fascinated by the mirror. Maybe this is because mum's place is full of mirrors and he got bored looking at them.

16 April 2010

Sleeping Styles

I like taking photos of Shern sleeping. His sleeping styles make me laugh. The 3rd picture shows Shern really knocked out - he is so into dreamland.

17 April 2010 & 21 April 2010

In this picture, Shern looks so relaxed here. Like lying down on a hammock in Hawaii. :P

21 April 2010

Books

Shern likes books. He likes me reading to him. We established a good bedtime routine of me going through a few of his favourite books just before putting him to sleep.

One of his favourite books is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Look at how Shern pokes his finger into the holes.

16 April 2010

Grills

One of Shern's favourite places in the house is the balcony grills. He likes to stand and hold on to the grills while he cruises and plays there.

23 April 2010

Snacking Time

Occasionally, I give Shern a snack or two. Be it yoghurt, or apples or Heinz's Teething Biscuits. This picture, Shern is having Farley's Rusk.

15 April 2010

Bumbo Seat

This seat is really great. At 10 mths, Shern is still sit in his Bumbo Seat. His high chair is in mum's place. But when he is at home and I need to feed him, I popped him into the seat.
Sometimes he do tries to get out, but luckily the tray in front of the seat blocked him from getting out.

17 April 2010

New Toy

I bought this wooden loop-y toy for him 2nd hand online for RM25 including delivery. Shern likes the blocks in it and knows how to loop the beads through the loops. This is an educational toy which helps him on hand and eye coordination and creativity.

19 April 2010

Wide Smiles Showing All Of His Teeth

I love it when Shern laughs and smiles and giggles so wide that you can see all of his teeth. However, whenever he does that, his eyes became so small! :P
Ain't he the cutest?

18 April 2010

More Mobile

Shern is getting very mobile now. He crawls everywhere in the house. He started crawling a few months back but I should say that he really master the crawling skill this month. He can crawl very fast and seldom slips. But sometimes he still do because he drools and his saliva wets the floor and made it slippery.

Standing up holding to things is also easy-peasy to him. He is now cruising - taking slow steps holding on to furniture.

Little Things Amuses Him

All he needs is just something which is not his usual toys. He wants new things. This time is a blue plastic cup.
Shern is so happy just playing with the cup. Exploring it. Pinching it. Licking it. Biting it.
This makes him happy, and most importantly, occupied for at least the next 15 minutes.

24 April 2010

Grabbing With His Fingers

Shern can now grab things with his fingers, and not only with his whole hands. He can pick up objects using only his thumb and index finger. He is especially intrigue with small things, and this includes dead insects and dust, which sometimes he picks them up and into the mouth they go.

Strong Teeth

Shern sometimes wants to show off how strongs all his 8 teeth are. He bites things just using his teeth, only his teeth. No hands.
And not to forget, almost everything goes into his mouth.
Arghhh.....

15 & 17 April 2010

Graco Swing

We received a used Graco Swing from Su Li. Took Min & I more than an hour to assemble it. Hey, pardon us ok, coz we do not have any assembly instructions. Tried googling online and very few matches for our searches because it is a very old model.

After assembling it, we were exhausted but proud of ourselves. It is a very good design. No screws, thus don't need any screwdrivers.
Everything just need to click on the right spots, and yet every click is so firm and sturdy!

Shern is sitting on it happily. Not sure whether he understands that he is on a swing.
But I personally find the swing swings a little too fast.

18 April 2010

Clapping Hands & Waving Bye-bye

Shern can now clap his hands. And he can wave bye-bye to people. Shern starts learning and responding.

Play

Whenever Shern is in a good mood, he likes to go into his playpen to play with all the colourful balls in it.
And Shern likes to mess up my stuff. Look at the mess that Shern created with my name cards. Sigh.

21 & 18 April 2010

Gaya

I like this photo because I find Shern sits on the floor with such style. Gayanya!

24 April 2010

How Is Mummy Doing?

Is still having lack of sleep because Shern still does not sleep through the night.
