Kids DIY Halloween Costume: The Making of Space Shuttle Costumes

I am no fan of scary, ghostly Halloween costumes. However, I enjoy the cutesy and fun costumes that the kids donned on for Halloween. So every year, I try my best to dress my kids up in some fun costume.

I am always a last-minute mum in making the costumes. But this year, I am worse. I did this 2 nights before the event (and I only have night time after the kids zzz "_")

I initially wanted to just let them use back last year's Dragon Cape & Mask Costume for this year's Halloween as I am rather busy for the month of Oct & Nov.
But then Khye came home and requested for a Space Shuttle costume, which he says he wants to wear it to his Mandarin class next week.
Shern also did request for a Thor costume but I told him no promise. I will see what I can do in 2 nights.

This post is about how I DIY the Space Shuttle Costumes for Khye and Vern with whatever materials I have at home.

Below is basically what I used to make the whole costume:

- Shoe Box

- White Cardstock / Paper

- 2 Paper Cups

- UHU or any strong glue

- Sharpie Permanent Ink Pen

- elastic bands (not in photo)

- recycled the crepe paper from the Jet Pack Costumes for the "fire" (not in photo)

This is a very easy DIY.
Took me about 2 hours to finish it.

The photo below shows you how I did it.
Wrap the shoe box with the white paper (easier if you can get a white shoe box). Then stick a paper on top the shoe box like a flap.
Next, add some wings at the side.
Stick the paper cups in front for the engines. And add a paper in between for the tail.

As for the pointed top, cut a circle and fold it like a hat for the kid to wear.
Then draw some windows wherever you deem appropriate. I also wrote the letters MYS for Malaysia and printed some Malaysia flag to stick onto it.
Then, turn to the back and punched some holes and then thread some elastic bands into it for the kid to wear the costume.
Lastly, glue some crepe paper as the fire below the space shuttle.

I also involved Khye in the process. He helped me draw and colour the windows on his Space Shuttle.

These are my 2 little models and proud owners of the Space Shuttle Costumes.

For best effect, wear black or dark colour clothes.

And just tonight was our very first Halloween event at Straits Quay.
And so we brought the boys there and they were so proud to wear their costumes and to collect a big bunch of candies each.

Kids DIY Costume - The Making of Harry Potter Costume

Shern's school is celebrating Book Week this week.

His school has always been promoting the enjoyment of reading, and so naturally they really was into the Book Week celebration.

They invited parents to go to school to share stories with the children, so that the children are exposed to stories from all over the world.

They also had a book swap in which the student can bring their books they'd finished reading to swap for different books from other students.

And the biggest event of the week is the Dressing Up Parade.

Students are encouraged to go to school dressed as a character from a book. Everyone will have a mini parade in the field and parents are encouraged to stay too.

It was all fun stuff in his school the whole week!

Shern came home and told me one week before that he wants to be Harry Potter.

I was busy last week and also this week so I just started thinking of ideas in my head. I knew I needed to have a black robe of some kind and Harry Potter's glasses.

I did publish in my personal Facebook page to ask if I can borrow a black trench coat or a black coat of some kind. No such luck. No one has a black trench coat his size.

So I needed to improvise.

Two days before the Parade day, I went to Mr. DIY and thank goodness I found the last pair of a circle black rimmed sunglasses for just RM2.30!

It was actually quite difficult to break the tinted shades in the sunglasses. Hubby helped and voila, that was Harry Potter glasses!

Went to Mr. DIY and Daiso to find a tie or a scarf in Gryffindor colour (scarlett and gold/red and yellow) but couldn't find any suitable one!

We ended up printing a tie from the internet and then coloured it ourselves, and tada....Harry Potter Gryffindor Tie! We also put a black rubber string for the punched tie so that it goes around his neck.

As for the Gryffindor Crest badge, I just printed it off the internet too, and attached a safety pin behind with a Scotch Tape.

I gave him a chopstick as his wand. We had this suitable dark brown wooden chopsticks with a slight curve at one end, so it was perfect as his Harry Potter Wand!

And the most important one of all is the lightning scar. I took my eyeliner, and just drew on his forehead and so he has a Harry Potter Lightning Scar!

I dressed him in a white shirt, and in the end, borrowed my mum's clingy sweater robe and it was perfect. I pinned his Gryffindor Crest onto the robe. I then paired it with black pants and black shoes and he looks great in his Harry Potter Robe!

This was how he looks like all dressed up as Mr. Harry Potter!

Kids Halloween Costume - Dragon Cape & Mask

My 3 Little Dragons for Halloween - October 2016

So Shern requested to be a dragon for this year's Halloween. He wanted a dragon cape. But I suck at sewing and so I requested my mum's help to sew the dragon cape for Shern.

And the super awesome pho-pho who loves my kids to bits very happily sewed the dragon cape for them. Below is what I got from Pinterest to give her an inspiration.

And together we brainstormed on how to make it given the limited time and resources we had.

And she came up with these awesome dragon capes.

Of course she couldn't just make for Shern, she had to make one for Khye as well coz she loves them both dearly. My kids are soooo lucky, right, to have such a doting pho-pho!

I couldn't tell you in detail how she sewed that. (Hmm....I should ask her to be a guest blogger for this, shall I? :P)

Anyway, I made Dragon Masks to go along with the Dragon Capes.

For the Dragon Masks, I can tell you how I did it. It is sooo easy even for a noob at sewing person like me. Minimal sewing skills needed, I promise!

I browsed through Pinterest as usual and I got this free dragon mask template from Mummykins website.

Printed it out and then cut them according to the template.

Then you traced it on the pieces of felts and just cut it out accordingly.

And then what I did was I UHU glued the pieces of felt together to make the mask.

The green one's for Shern and the yellow one for Khye.

I used the colour according to the Dragon Cape colours that Pho-pho made for them.

And then I did the easiest sewing I know, tacking the thread together on some of the parts to make sure they hold together, that was all.

And then I sewed the rubber string behind like this.

The end results of the masks are like this.

When paired together the mask and the cape, this is how it looks like...a complete set!

And then I added in baby Vern's dragon costume, a cape and mask too which I bought quite some time ago.
