Breastmilk Storage in my fridge

These are the breastmilk supply I have currently in my home freezer and the freezer in my mum's hse.
Mostly are 4oz but some are 3oz on bad days.

The freezer in my house

The freezer in mum's hse

It looks like my storage supply will be insufficient because lately Shern seems to be drinking a lot. He is like a human alarm clock. He cries for milk every 2 hours.

My milk factory max can only produce 4oz every 3 hours.

I think I need to pump every 2 hours now to tell my brain that milk supply is insufficient. Shern wants MORE!

Lost

I lost 2 things in 1 day.

1st - my glasses.
2nd - my Cooler Bag.

Went for a quick shop to Island Plaza with mum & Min yesterday.
While trying on a dress in Somerset Bay in Metrojaya, I accidentally left my glasses in the ladies' changing room.
When I realized I left it there half an hour later, it was no more there.

I was shocked. Shocked because I never imagine someone would steal my glasses. They are not sunglasses. They are normal glasses with power.
I mean, even if they take it, they won't be able to wear it. So why take it?

I was feeling very disappointed after that, because i need my glasses. Need them to watch tv. Need them when I am driving.
And I am not a contact lens person. I just want my plain old glasses back! ;(

Then later at night, I realized I lost my Cooler Bag - the one which I use to store my expressed breastmilk (EBM).
It was no fancy cooler. Just a cheap KFC Cooler but it serves its purpose.
And my 2 blue-ice (ice replacement/ice pack) which I put inside it are gone as well.

And well, I really need a cooler bag so I had to rush to the supermarket and got myself a new cooler bag and also blue ice
Bought the Simple Dimple Cooler Bag for RM29.90.
Bought Rubbermaid Blue Ice (big) for RM12.00.

My Breastfeeding Experience - Part 1 (2nd Month)

'Breastfeeding is easy, how difficult can it be?' - Well, I find this very untrue based on my own experience.

When I found out I was pregnant, I already made up my mind to breastfeed my baby. I read up and learnt a lot on breastfeeding.
I read many books, googled, read other mum's blogs, and I even went to breastfeeding support group meeting.
I wanted to be prepared physically and mentally.

When Yiu-Shern was born, the nurse brought him for me to breastfeed him. I tried to put what I've learnt to practical - Shern's stomach facing my stomach, Shern's whole mouth should cover up my whole nipple and part of my areola, etc.

However, Shern did not really latch on. It was merely just a short suckle on and off. He was asleep most of the time. I was like 'Well, it's OK. Will try again another time'.

On the 2nd day, he started suckling and I guessed he took his first milk of colostrum, which should be providing him with all the nutrients and my antibodies to kick-start his immune system.
I was ecstatic!

On the 3rd day, the milk came. My breasts suddenly became so engorged and painful that I wanted to scream and cry in pain.
To make things worse, Shern then had jaundice and he became sleepy and lethargic until he did not really want to suckle on my breasts.
I got so worried then.

On the 4th day, Shern's jaundice did not improve and thus was asked to stay in the hospital for another 2 days to be under the photolight therapy. I also stayed on as a lodger as I wanted to breastfeed Shern.
Breasts continued to be engorged although I breastfed Shern every 2-3 hours.

I became frustrated as even though I continued to breastfed Shern, my breasts still remained engorged and so painful.
This continued even after I went home on the 6th day.
My breasts continued to be engorged until after a week.
Usually breasts engorgement only last for 24-48 hours. But for me, it lasted for more than a week.

Besides that, my nipple became sore and cracked. I had blood oozing out at one of my pumping session.

This was the most challenging time for me.

Luckily, Su Li from Baby Paradise Breastfeeding Support Group came to visit me every once in a while. Thanks also to Lay Ean who continued to support me through the phone & sms.
Without them, I guess I would have given up by then.

It got better on the 3rd week onwards. My nipples got hardened and can withstand Shern's vigorous suckling.

Usually my breastfeeding sessions last for nearly and hour, and my pumping sessions last for half an hour to 45 minutes.

I was frustrated that I can only produce around 1 oz of breastmilk in the 2nd week. Some people commented that I may not have enough milk for Shern, but I did not care and I insisted on breastfeeding him exclusively.

I tried several methods (as advised by friends/books/internet) to increase my milk supply:
- Drank Milk Maid Tea
- Took fenugreek seeds
- Drank Raw Papaya Soup
- Sesame Powder

I find all the methods above CANNOT work for me.

All I drink now is Anmum Lacta milk powder. This is to boost the quality of my breastmilk.
One thing is that I know I need to drink lots of water in order for me to pump out adequate milk.

In the first week, I had about 1/2 ounce of breastmilk.
In the 2nd week, I had about 1 ounce of breastmilk.
At the end of the first month, I had about 2 ounces of breastmilk.
Now, at 1 1/2 months (7th week), I pump about 4 ounces of breastmilk every 3-4 hourly.

So is this a lot? I am not sure.
I hope my milk supply will increase as time goes by.
I wish to breastfeed for 6 months if I can survive further breastfeeding ordeals.

Breastpumps Reviews

I have the privilege to try out 3 different electronic breastpumps.

Su Li from Baby Paradise (breastfeeding support group based in Penang) lives in the same apartment as my mum. (Fyi, Baby Paradise do lend out breastpumps for trial before purchasing them. Don't worry, they change into new parts before lending them to you, so they very hygienic)

They are Spectra 3, Safety Plus & Medela Mini E Breastpumps.

Spectra 3 Electric Breastpump

Review
Pros
- Economical
- Quiet - more privacy & also allowing use without disturbing baby (useful when you wish to breastfeed baby on one breast while pumping the other - saves time and great let-down)
- Can be converted into double pump (optional breast cup)

Cons
- I find the motor not powerful enough comparingly
- Still bulky although it is said to be lighter and smaller than Spectra 2

Safety Plus Portable Electric Breastpump

Review
Pros
-
Dual Stage Expression Technology (mimic breast-suckling rythm - stimulation & expression phase)
- Economical (dual stage expression tech at only a fraction of Medela Swing's price)
- Comes with a warranty period of 12 months for pump unit & AC adaptor
- AC Adapter & AA Batteries Operation
- Powerful motor

Cons
- Slow in the expression mode (which is a real no-no for me because it will take me forever to express.
- The breastshield not of clear transparent colour (don't like it because I cannot see if my milk is 'shooting' out or not)

Medela Mini Electric Breastpump

Review
Pros
- Small & Light - ideal for travelling (smallest electric pump in the market I think)
-
AC Adapter & AA Batteries Operation
- Motor powerful enough - very strong suction
- Clear, transparent breastshield for better visibility

Cons
- Very noisy
- I find it uncomfortable and a little painful with ongoing pumping due to the strong suction.

Summary
All the different brands breastpumps have their own pros and cons. Which breastpump is the best for you depends on which is suitable for your needs.
All breastfeeding mums have different needs.

Among the breastpumps mentioned, I find Medela Mini E most suitable for me - because I need a pump which is small & light, strong motor power, and pumps reasonably fast. However, I am still uncomfortable with the strong suction as it gives me a little pain with ongoing pumping.
And I hate the loud and noisy motor. Everybody knows exactly what you are doing the moment you turn it on!

So I am still on the lookout for other breastpumps that better suit me!

Yiu-Shern - week 7

24 July 2009

Yiu-Shern's 7 weeks Milestone

Jaundice
After being formula-fed for 4 days, his bilirubin level dropped from 245 to 135....magic!
This proves Dr. Dan is right - he is really having breastmilk jaundice.
Anyway, that puts our hearts at ease.
We are bringing him for another test next Monday before we convert him back to exclusive breastmilk.

BCG scar
His BCG pus has dried up and now leaves a beautiful small scar on his left upoper arm (read up that he has to re-take the BCG jab at age 7 if there is no scar)

Weight
We weighed him at the Tg. Bungah gov clinic last Monday when he was taking the Bilirubin test and he weighs a hefty 5.1kg.

However, some of my mum's friends commented that he is not chubby enough. But I think as long as he is contented and full after his feed and is happy - it is enough.
Everyone always take formula-fed babies as benchmark - which may not be correct and accurate.

Anyway, I find Yiu-Shern is tall for his age. He is also getting chubbier.
At the rate he is going, he will soon outgrow his clothes.
What a pity, I received many nice 0-3 mths clothes from my friends.

Hair
His hair is getting longer.
He now looks like a punk!
Anyway, I noticed that his hair started dropping.
Once the 'lil bump on his left side of the head subsides, we will take him for his first hair cut to have his hair trimmed real short :)

punky Shern - 24 July 2009

Favourites
He absolutely loves his musical cot mobiles - both the one in my house (Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Mobile) and the one in his pho-pho's house (Anmum's Musical Mobile). His eyes track the objects (fishes/moon/stars) rotating. It is so nice to see his eyes so fixtated at them.

Fisher-Price Ocean Wonders Mobile with Remote Control

Shern in his baby cot at home

Car Seat
Yiu-Shern has gotten used to sitting quietly in his car seat.
He looks so cute sleeping snugly in his car seat.
During the ride home from pho-pho's house which is after dinner, he will be fascinated with the street lamp and all the lights flickering as our car zooms by.
For the ride to pho-pho's house in the morning, I usually bring a toy to divert his attention whenever he wants to make noise.

Shern in his Anakku Infant Carrier Car Seat - 23 July 2009

How Is Mummy Doing?

I am starting to get a bit worried about my flabby belly aka mummy tummy. I wonder if I will ever have a flat torso again.
I doubt so as I did not go for 'urut'. I can't do situps. And I have no money for Marie France Bodyline.
Sigh...

I need to force myself to drink more water. I feel like I don't drink enough water.
Insuficient water = Insufficient breast milk

I am still pumping ~4oz every 3-4 hourly with Medela Electric Mini E breastpump. (I have tried a few breastpumps and I still find this the best.)

Yiu-Shern - week 6

12 July 2009

13 July 09

Yiu-Shern's 6 weeks Milestone

Jaundice
As mentioned, Dr. Dan recommended me to feed him formula for 48 hours if I wish to lower down his breastmilk jaundice level immediately.
But instead of 2 days, I fed him formula for 4 days until his next bilirubin test at the Govt Clinic on Monday.

Luckily for me, he did not reject formula and he drank it with the Breastflow bottle.

Poop & Pee
One thing I notice is that his frequency of poo-ing and pee-ing has also changed…he used to poo frequently, but in smaller amounts. In the past week, I noticed that he now poo-s less frequently, but in larger quantities…

Due to breastmilk consumption, his poop are like mustard - golden watery consistency. Therefore, it is rather messy. And when I say he poo-s in large quantity, it means that he wets his lampin right up to his waist. And if I am careless and not pin up his lampin tight enough, his poo will oozes out - eeeewwwwwww

I also notice he always pee-s immediately right after his feed. He will pee a minimum of 3 times within the half an hour span right after his feed.

Development
Development-wise, his neck muscles are getting stronger day by day.
When I put him on his tummy, he is able to lift up his head fully and turns from left to right and vice-versa. ( he looks like he is doing mini push-ups)
Even when I burp him, he now always refuses to lay his head down and always tries to lift his head up.

His hands are also very strong now. When I carry him and if he is making a fuss, he uses his hands to show his temper. He will stretches his hands and punches here and there - and that hurts.

He smiles more frequently now...though it is still difficult to make him smile when you want to. He smiles when he likes - when he is pleased and not when we are making funny faces for him to see :D

He is now spending more time awake. He sleeps less hours now. And the bad thing is that when he is awake, he cries!

One bad thing. He absolutely loves to be carried.
It is really difficult to put him down after he falls asleep in our arms.

How Is Mummy Doing?

I am getting used to being mummy now. Got used to the daily routine revolving around my little baby boy.

Felt a bit guilty eating raw salmon as I am breastfeeding. Hopefully Sushi King mantains their quality and those sushi I ate are fresh and have no bacteria.
But I think I will continue eating them, as long as I think they are fresh :)

World's 2nd Tallest Man @ Prangin Mall

Last Sunday, Peter insisted we head over to Prangin Mall to take a picture with the World's 2nd Tallest Man - 26-year-old Pakistani Ijaz Ahmed after reading about it in the newspaper.

It costs only RM10 for a pic. But in exchange, you get a free Cathay cinema ticket and a RM20 Popular voucher.
You are actually doing charity because all proceeds goes to him for his medical expenses.

About Ijaz Ahmed

He actually looks a little weird because he is somehow disproportionate. His head looks way smaller than his whole body.

However, I believe in a little charity goes a long way.

Sake Heaven

Look what I ate yesterday at Sushi King?

This is what I've been deprived of for 9 months+.

This is the actual Sake Sushi I ate yesterday

Ahhh....orgasmic!

Review: Pigeon: Rapid Steam Sterilizer

Another product worth mentioning is the Pigeon's Rapid Steam Sterilizer.

I was doing some survey on which sterilizer should I purchase. Or maybe should I or should I not purchase a sterilizer. I mean, during my days, my mum says she just use boiling water to sterilize my bottles.

Then I read some forum and blog reviews about the advantages of this product.

More advantages of the sterilizer:
- Rapid six-minute steam sterilisation cycle effectively destroys bacteria, without the use of chemicals.
- Automatically switches off when the sterilisation cycle is complete - the power-on indicator shows that the unit is switched on.
- A large accessory tray holds all bottle accessories for the convenience of sterilisation.
- When not opened, the steam sterilizer keeps contents sterile for up to six hours.

Review:
Pros
- Six-minute steam sterilization which is quick
- Really big enough to cater for many bottles and accessories
- Adjustable tray height which I like (as I have mixture of bottle sizes)
- Easy maintenance - just need to squeeze half a lemon into the sterilizer once a week and leave it for 30 minutes before rinsing it off

Cons
- Bulky - takes up much of my countertop space
- Need to remove the water inside everytime after use - if leave inside for too long, it will leave a smell.
- Expensive (Penang major supermarkets selling for RM433. I bought it in Singapore for S$100 - what a steal!)

Day 1 vs Day 43

Yiu-Shern is now 1 month, 1 week and 5 days old.
Many friends tell me 'wow...so fast your baby is so big already...time flies..'
But to me time crawled by lately.

It is very tiring to take care of Yiu-Shern. I mean, he wants like 24/7 of my time.

I hardly have time for anything else - I miss baking. I miss scrapbooking. I miss reading. I miss going out. I even miss cleaning my house.

My hands are aching. My back is aching. My whole body aches actually.
It is such a sacrifice taking care of him.

However, my heart melts everytime I see him looking at me.
I get so much satisfaction when I see:
  • Shern suckling my breast happily
  • Shern's contented face after his bath
  • Shern's crying stop after I pick him up
  • Shern's happy face after I change his wet diapers
  • Shern sleeping like a baby in my arms
I know it will all be so worth it...

See how much my baby boy has grown...

Baby Blues / Post-Partum Blues

I have heard and read about Post-Partum Blues / Baby Blues. But I never thought I would be one of them who would go through it.

Yes, having a baby can bring much joy, but it can also be very challenging in ways I never expected. Having a baby is both exhilarating and exhausting.

I started experiencing baby blues symptoms 4 days after delivery.

I felt weepy and sad and I found myself crying over little things. Although I am blessed with a beautiful and healthy baby and also a loving husband, I still got very depressed - it is a feeling I couldn't describe to anyone.

Worrying about many things make it worse - I felt anxious about my baby's well-being (jaundice), my transition to motherhood, and adjusting to my new routine.
I felt overwhelmed by my new responsibilities.

The physical pain of my engorged breasts added with my sleep deprivation didnt't help either. I was becoming very teary up 'til a little after the first week post-pregnancy.

Things started looking brighter after that. Breasts engorgement got better, everything got more organized, etc. All in all, I got used being a mummy

I got better as days go by...feeling more confident about everything -the baby, the routine, etc.

Thanks to a loving husband and support from family and friends, I SURVIVED! ;D

Yiu-Shern - week 5

Yiu-Shern's 5 weeks Milestone

- Yiu-Shern started smiling. I saw his somewhat rare smile yesterday. It must be a REAL smile because his whole face lighted up when he smiled.

- His focus on an object is getting better. You can see his eyes following the object which is moving

Shern's favourite time of the day is Bath Time. He likes water and he enjoys the cool feeling after bath.

Bathing for the 2nd time in pho-pho's house on a hot afternoon

Being wrapped in his towel after bath

Contented face after bath

Shern favourite toy is the free Anmum sample Musical Cot Mobile (courtesy from Dr. Eric)

How Is Mummy Doing?

- Having more hours of sleep at night, thus feeling more energize the next morning.

- Still feeling very 'stuck' at home - legs itching to go out.

Yiu-Shern - week 4

Yiu-Shern's 4 weeks Millestone

-Yiu-Shern became more vocal starting last week.
Besides crying to get our attention, he started cooing, gurgling and grunting..mostly to himself though.

-His head/neck is is real steady now. He can heave his head up momentarily while lying flat on his stomach.

-His legs are also very strong and he started to use them to kick real hard when he is angry.

-Still having breastmilk jaundice - masih kuning!

-Took his BCG jab at his 1st month visit to the paed on 7 July 2009

Shern's growth measurement:
Age - 1 month @ 7 July 2009
Weight - 4.6 kg
Length/Height - 53 cm
Head Circumference - 37 cm

As the saying goes 'sleeping like a baby'....

Feeling proud wearing this t-shirt - I'm a Tough BOY Like My Dad

Having fun on his Activity Playmat
(This playmat actually kept him quiet for a longer period...phew... )

Mummy & Baby bonding time

Daddy & Baby bonding time

How is Mummy Doing?

- No more nipple crack/sore because they are already hardened and can withstand my vigorous sucker baby.

- Feeling less tensed and getting used to being a mummy by now.

- Am glad that Peter is actually QUITE a GOOD daddy :)

- Proud that I can handle almost everything of Yiu-Shern's - from changing diapers to bathing, etc

- Starting to express out my milk for storage - only can express 4-5oz per 3 hour sitting...little?

- Went to Gurney Plaza for the first time and felt like 'I Juz Got Out of Jail'......ecstatic!!! (ended up buying Yiu-Shern's stuff ;)

Review: The First Years: Breastflow BPA-Free Bottles

I want to write some reviews on the baby products which I bought and am using - in hope to help the mothers out there for some honest feedback reviews.

When I was searching for bottles, I was looking after 1 word only - BPA-free
(bisphenol A-free). . I didn't want to expose my baby to harmful chemicals that may leech from non-BPA-free plastics. Yes...I AM kiasu!

I found out that many brands does not have BPA-free bottles...even leading brands like Avent, etc.
BPA-free bottles are indeed more expensive. Almost double the prices of those brands which does not have the BPA-free stickers.

I saw The First Years: Breastflow Bottles with the sticker BPA-free on sale at Toys 'R' Us. I went home to do some research before buying them.
I like what I read online and went back to buy it the next day. I bought 5 oz bottles (3 packs) for RM49.90. (RM10 discount)

Breastflow is the only feeding system that requires both suction and compression, just like breast feeding. The nipple is designed to mimic the breast so baby can latch on and to encourage the same mouth and tongue position as breastfeeding. The double nipple system requires both suction and compression, just like breast feeding and baby controls the flow of milk. It's the bottle most like breastfeeding.

The Breastflow System is ideal for me because I plan to express out my breastmilk and feed to Yiu-Shern via bottle so that he won't be too attched to me. It is also good for nursing mothers who would like to introduce a bottle, are returning to work, or need to supplement while their baby is in day care or with a caregiver.
Because Breastflow bottles so closely mimic the feel and action of breastfeeding, care givers can bottle feed baby while Mom is working and Mom can still continue to breastfeed.

Review:
Pros
- Really works - no trouble transitioning from bottle-sucking to breast-suckling (I dunno if it is really due to this!)
- Comes with a lid for each bottle, so the bottles can be used as Storage Bottles as well.
- Baby's mouth is agape while sucking, which mimic the mouth position while suckling on my breasts.
- Wide-necked bottle which is easy to wash.

Cons
- Need time to put together the different parts of the bottle.
- When the milk flows into the teat, you need to squeeze them back into the bottle if it is too full. (but even if you don't squeeze it, baby can actually finish sucking all the milk inside, just that it takes a longer time)

Rating: 6/10

48 hours of Formula Milk

Yiu-Shern's jaundice level is still sky-rocket high. Reading was at 245 as of yesterday.
I called Dr. Dan and he asked me to bring Yiu-Shern to his clinic along with his pee and poo-poo.

Shu-Min, ah Yee & I waitied for more than half an hour with a small bottle, just waiting for him to pee. And we took Yiu-Shern's early morning poo in his diapers for Dr. Dan.

Dr. Dan reassured me that he is quite sure that it is Breastmilk Jaundice and he asked me not to worry. He checked his pee and poo and said they looked fine.

I am also more assured as I know all the necessary tests had been done (urine, blood, ultrasound) and results show his liver is working fine and everything is normal.

But Dr. Dan said if I want the jaundice to go down more quickly, he asked me to switch to formula milk for Yiu-Shern for 2 days, then only to go back to breastfeeding him.
This is because he said the breastmilk jaundice is caused by the hormones in my breastmilk.

So to put everyone at home at ease, I am feeding him with Enfalac A+ for today and tomorrow. Hopefully, this will pull down his bilirubin level.

Seeing him crying and searching for my breasts is indeed heart-wrenching. All I could do what to tuck his bottle into his mouth....hoping he won't miss my breasts so much. ;)

From Breastmilk to EnfalacA+ for 48 hours

Sex Life & Free Condoms At The Govt Clinic

Yes...it is true.

During Yiu-Shern's 1 month checkup at the Tanjung Bungah Klinik Kesihatan, as part of the Perancang Keluarga, they gave us the options of 'the Pill' or 'Condoms'.

I am never in favour of the pill, so we opted for condoms and they gave us 12. The nurse then told us to come back for more anytime we want! So I guess we will have free condoms for the rest of our lives....unless we are too lazy to go there to collect!

So what about our sex life?

Sex was probably the last thing on my mind during the first few weeks post-pregnancy. My life was in complete chaos with the new member of the family, when two became three.

My life was practically breastfeeding him, changing his diapers and cooing him to sleep. It is still the same now I guess.

However, I realized the importance of rekindling our love and intimacy. Both of us hope that the new baby can bring such joy to our lives that it enhances sexual intimacy.

Anyway, so far...so good :D

Introducting Pacifier

Initially, I was reluctant to introduce pacifier to Yiu-Shern for fear of causing him nipple confusion. I was afraid that he may latch on to my breasts the way he sucks the pacifier...causing me much nipple crack and much pain.

However, I could no longer keep off the pacifier as Yiu-Shern is treating my breasts as his personal pair of pacifiers. He latches on my breasts 24/7 and would not let me go. This makes my breasts very sore.

So...tada...introducing Anakku pacifier to naughty Yiu-Shern. However, he does not seem to like it that much. Sometimes he will sucks on it when his mood is good. When he is in a very bad mood, he doesnt want it. He just wants to suckle at my breasts. Sigh...

Anyway, I hope this will not create nipple confusion to him. If so...there goes breastfeeding....

Yiu-Shern - week 4 - Fullmoon

1st of all, I want to announce that this day also represents the last day of my 1 month confinement period....phew....although I broke many pantang-larang :)

Next, Yiu-Shern is now 1 month old.
We had a small celebration and we took some photos to commemorate this day. (too bad Yiu-Shern did not manage to take any pics with Ah Kong & Ah Ma. Nvm, another time)

Yiu-Shern's 1 month milestone...

- His neck is getting stronger. He can hold his head up briefly, especially when he is searching for my breasts :D
- He seems to be able to focus on an object now...with his eyes following the object for a short distance
- He sucks really well now. His latching improved and he is STILL a vigorous sucker
- He is still a naughty boy who likes to be cuddled to sleep

Mummy's 1 month milestone

- Still not enough sleep at night as I am working as a cow full-time ;P
- Still worried about Yiu-Shern's breastmilk jaundice and moist belly-cord
- C-sec wound has healed
